Land Grants
He was born about 1643, Henrico Co., Virginia and died about 1680 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. His property in Isle of Wight Co. We have not found any land grants that show that Lt. John Hopkins Howell purchased land in Isle of Wight Co., but we know he did because of the inventory sheet. Prior to buying land in Isle of Wight Co., he purchased two land grants in Charles City Co. The First Land Grant was March 25, 1663, that land adjoined Captain Frances Eppes land. Second Land Grant was in Charles City Co., August 18, 1669, for 203 acres. After the death of their father, Mary Howell and Hopkins Howell were granted land in Isle of Wight Co. Land Grant For Mary Howell and Hopkins Howell , "ophrans of John Hopkins Howell dec'd"

812. Edward STRODE

Edward STRODE was born about 1663 to 1668, probably at Downside, Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England, the son of Edward Strode and Joan Goninge
His wife's name is not known.
Their children, possibly born in England, France and/or Holland, were:
George, born in 1685;
Samuel, born about 1687, married Anna ?, and died about 13 May 1765 in Loudoun County, Virginia, his will being recorded 13 November 1769;
William, born in 1688 and died in 1746;
Edward , born in 1690;
Martha, married Morgan Bryan in 1719 and died on 29 August 1762 in North Carolina; and maybe
Jeremiah.
Elston quoting Hutchins from The History and Antiquities of the County Dorset says, 'After the accession in 1691 (correct date 13 February 1689) of Queen Mary and King William to the English Throne, Edward Strode refused to take the oath they demanded of him, and was fined forty pounds. The following year another order was issued by the Justice of the Quarter Session. This order was that the oath be administered again, and if Edward Strode still refused, he should be committed to the gaol.' Perry uses the same quote but note the error in date of accession to the throne in both cases. Neither checked their history books.
The preponderance of evidence is that an Edward Strode, wife and children fled England and went to France and/or Holland. We know it was not Edward Strode (1630-1703) because he died in England in 1703. It must have been Edward (born c.1665), son of Edward of Downside, that fled England.

864. Daniel BAYLESS

Bayless Family of Long Island & New Jersey by Howard Green Bayless
roll #873968

Daniel Bayless was about 42 years of age when he decided to move from New Jersey to some place in the South. There were nine children, all of whom were evidently born in New Jersey with the possible exception of Hezekiah. Daniel Bayless moved from New Jersey to Cecil County, Maryland sometime between 1757-62. By 1771 he had moved to Loudon County, Virginia. It is said that each time he moved he would leave power-of-attorney with a friend until he could establish another residence. His occupation is given as surveyor but, like most people of that era, he probably was proficient in many trades. In 1780-81 he, along with other settlers, started the long trek to Washington County, Tennessee, then North Carolina. This territory became part of Tennessee in 1796. Deed records at Jonesboro, Tennessee reveal that Daniel and three of his sons, Samuel, Reuban, and Hezekiah, were granted lands in Washington County as early as 1784. Daniel Bayless was pastor of the Cherokee Baptist Church which was organized in 1783 and was the first Baptist Church in the Tennessee Territory. We are not sure when his pastorate began but he served until his death in 1800. His son, John, succeeded him as pastor and served until his death in 1823. It is assumed that all of these earlier members of the Bayless family are buried in the Cemetery of the Cherokee Baptist Church (five miles south of Jonesboro), although the inscriptions on the earlier markers are illegible.
